Cascade District - Rochester, NY

Overview

The Cascade District in downtown Rochester is a former industrial zone that has been transformed into a mixed commercial-residential-use neighborhood. Before Interstate 490 and the Inner Loop arrived in the 1960s, this area was adjacent to the Corn Hill neighborhood. Now, it’s a new hot spot known for loft apartments, and its closeness to Frontier Field, where the Rochester Red Wings baseball team plays, and to City Hall.

Essentials

This developing neighborhood has a couple of small diners, a liquor store, a boutique and an art-supply shop in the immediate area. Since the Cascade District is downtown, it’s not a long walk to find restaurants on Main or State streets, and a little further for bars and clubs.


Recreation & Entertainment

The Downstairs Cabaret Theatre Two is at 172 W. Main St., within the Cascade District. Frontier Field, home of the Rochester Red Wings, is a quick walk. Buckingham Commons, a converted high-rise building at 85 Allen St., has a rooftop desk from which you get an eagle-eye view of the stadium. Hochstein frequently offers low-cost or free musical and dance performances.


Transportation & Traffic

The Cascade District is virtually encircled by Interstate 490 and the Inner Loop. Access to the highways is almost right outside your door. Walking is the best option for getting around the neighborhood.


Pros & Cons

You’re in downtown, albeit just on the outskirts. You’re extremely close to the ballpark (and might be able to see it, especially at Buckingham Commons). The area is busy with downtown traffic.
