Welcome to Westfield, NY

Overview

Westfield is a farming town in northwest Chautauqua County, bordered to the north by Lake Erie, to the east by Portland and Chautauqua, to the south by Chautauqua and to the west by Ripley. The town includes a village also called Westfield, which is called the “Grape Juice Capital of the World” because of the many vineyards, most of which grow Concord grapes. Welch’s Grape Juice Co. had its corporate headquarters for years in Westfield, and the village is still home to a Welch’s processing plant.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Westfield has a Tops Friendly Markets store on East Main Street. Nearby Mayville (in the town of Chautauqua) has a Lighthouse Point Grocery and another Tops Friendly Markets. Ripley, to the west, has a State Line Grocery store. For retail shopping, Westfield has small stores like a CVS Pharmacy and antique shops; for more choices, it’s a quick drive to Fredonia, which has a Walmart Supercenter and more, and to Dunkirk, which has plazas with stores like JC Penney.

Recreation & Entertainment

Westfield is primarily an agricultural community, so the focus here is on wide, open spaces. Fishing is popular in Chautauqua Creek, and hiking and camping are also big draws. Nearby is Lake Erie State Park with its lovely sand beaches. To celebrate Westfield’s longtime association with grape-growing, the town has the Grape Discovery Center on West Main Road. Nearby Mayville has a miniature golf course.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Route 90) passes through Westfield, as do Route 20, Route 5 and Route 394.

Pros & Cons

Westfield is small and quiet, with several beautiful lakeside communities. There are places to shop and ear here, and Westfield is close to the Chautauqua Institution and other attractions.
