High Falls - Rochester, NY

Overview

The High Falls District is an historic area just north of downtown, the site of much of Rochester’s industrial development and an area that officials have targeted for revitalization. The housing includes lofts and apartments such as The Mills at High Falls. The area, naturally, overlooks the High Falls, one of three waterfalls of the Genesee River in Rochester, and includes the Pont de Rennes Bridge, a pedestrian bridge that offers stunning views of the High Falls.

High Falls has nightclubs and restaurants such as a Brazilian café, an Italian restaurant, a submarine sandwich shop, a café and bakery. The district is across from Eastman Kodak Co.’s world headquarters, which has a credit union that is open to the public. The closest library and post office are both downtown. Pharmacies can be found a bit north, on Lake Avenue, as well as downtown. The closest supermarket, Tops, also is on Lake Avenue (near Lexington Avenue).

High Falls is an easy to walk to Frontier Field for baseball or to see the occasional concerts held there. The Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial is just a few blocks away. WXXI, Rochester’s PBS television station, has its offices on State Street in High Falls and often hosts special events. Concerts have been held in the summer in recent years, but the future of those events is undecided. The Greentopia Festival, a recent addition to Rochester’s festival calendar, has been held at High Falls the past few years.

There are parking garages and some on-street parking in High Falls. The district itself is not busy with traffic, but State Street, which fronts the district, has heavy traffic with motorists heading to and from work and during events at Frontier Field. State Street turns into Lake Avenue to the north, a major thoroughfare, and Exchange Street to the south. Interstate 490 is a block south, off State.

Pros & Cons

High Falls is a great place for people who want to be close to downtown and experience Rochester’s history. Traffic can be busy on State Street.
